Updated: Feb 26, 2024

Coffee and iron what to know
Coffee & Iron Absorption

Several studies have already shown that the consumption of coffee with meal or even 1 hour after meal can reduce the iron absorption in the body.

Caffeine is not the only substance known to interfere with iron absorption. Polyphenols, tannins bind with iron during digestion and it make more difficult to absorb. Some studies show the effect on iron is dose-dependent - iron absorption decreases as those substances like polyphenols content of the food or beverage increase. Those substance are found in coffee and some tea.

If you are healthy person and know that you don’t have iron deficiency, this may not be a big deal. In the other hand if you have anemia - drinking coffee may not be the best idea. Studies show that if you drink coffee 1 hour before meal does not affect the absorption of iron.
